Saint Andrew

Brother of St. Peter, disciple of John the Baptist and later one of Jesus’ twelve apostles; he also brought his brother to follow Jesus. The Gospels make few references to him, and after Jesus’ death he probably preached in Asia Minor and then Greece, where he was crucified around the year 60. He is most frequently portrayed as a man with long white hair and a beard, holding the Gospel Book in his right hand and the cross in the shape of an X on which he died. Saint Andrew is the patron saint of brides, fishermen and mariners, rope-makers and butchers. He helps to ward off gout, throat pains and infertility.
