St. Christopher

According to legend, Christopher was a giant pagan who carried people across the river and became a Christian. Christopher is believed to have also carried a child, Jesus Christ, across the swift river who then baptized him. In Europe, he has been venerated as a helper in need since the 5th century and overseas since the 16th century. Legend says that he who looks at Christopher’s picture shall be protected during the day. That’s why pictures of St. Christopher used to be painted above the entry of a church or public building. He is a patron of pilgrims, travelers, tourists, drivers and sailors. He is portrayed as a giant with a staff carrying little Jesus on his shoulder. The fact that Christopher existed and died as a martyr is the only thing that we know for sure.
